Polish Aviation Day in the Police

Although most people associate Polish Aviation Day with military or civil aviation, it is worth recalling that the Polish Police also has machines that make our fleet currently one of the most modern police fleets in Europe. This is due to, among other things, large, multi-mission Black Hawks and Bell-407GXi helicopters

For several years, the police aviation in Poland has been undergoing modernization. Two types of helicopters have entered service in place of worn-out machines - Bell-407GXi and S-70i Black Hawk. These machines are perfect for securing various types of mass events. Police pilots also play their part in stopping, for example, road pirates.

For this purpose, primarily police Bells equipped with a camera are used, which has the ability to directly transmit images to a selected mobile station or to the officer on duty at a given police unit in real time. But these are not the only tasks for which police helicopters are used. Police pilots very often cooperate, for example, with counter-terrorists from CPKP "BOA", who are transported by air to perform official duties in the field. Therefore, police officers who are busting criminal groups involved in e.g. drug trafficking or vehicle theft often cooperate with the Police Aviation Directorate of the Main Police Headquarters of the Police Headquarters. Police helicopters also take part in searching for people who are hiding from justice and people who have gone missing, e.g. in difficult-to-reach areas. All these flight operations are carried out both during the day and at night, including the use of night vision goggles

It is worth noting that, in addition to strictly police tasks, our helicopters and crews are also excellent in operations carried out for non-police entities. As many as 30% of the implementations carried out by police pilots included activities such as support for the Border Guard in securing the eastern border, the Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue Service and the Mountain Volunteer Rescue Service, e.g. in rescue operations in the mountains, or support for the State Fire Service in fire-fighting operations. They were carried out both in the country (in national parks) and abroad (in Turkey and the Czech Republic) using special Bambi Bucket water tanks.

Since 2021, police pilots have been helping to carry out organ transports for transplantation, which are carried out at the request of transplant coordinators. Police helicopters transported not only organs such as the heart, liver, kidneys and lungs, but also, for example, a patient who required urgent intervention by a specialist cardiology team. The only chance to save his life was to transport him from one of the Masovian hospitals to the University Hospital in Wrocław, where he could undergo a heart transplant. The medics and police pilots also managed to win this race for life. In total, for almost three years, the police pilots took part in 49 such flights.

Their commitment and the passion they performed for their tasks were recognized in the aviation community. From 2021, our pilots can be proud of the unique statuette "Cumulus Special". By decision of the Chapter, the Police Aviation Board received this distinction, among others, for their constant service, maintaining public order and ensuring the safety of all of us, as well as carrying out flights under the slogan "Operation Heart". The winners of the prestigious "Blue Wings" award were two pilots who normally serve at the Warsaw airport in Bemowo, where police helicopters are stationed.
