"Faustina" - a biographical film

On 22 of March 1995, the biographical film titled "Faustina" was released in cinemas. The film was directed by Jerzy Łukaszewicz with Dorota Segda in the main role.

It is a hagiographic story of the life of Sister Faustina Kowalska. Initially, Joanna Szczepkowska was cast in the main role, but after the director changed, casting adjustments were made and the role was finally given to Dorota Segda. The film was shot in Drohiczyn, Siemiatycze and Zaręby Kościelne.

Maria Faustina Kowalska (real name Helena Kowalska) was born on 25 August 1905 in Głogowiec and died on 5 October 1938 in Kraków. She is a saint of the Catholic Church, nun from the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy, mystic, stigmaticist and visionary. Known primarily as a preacher of the cult of Divine Mercy, called an apostle of Divine Mercy and the author of the “Diary” in which she described her spiritual and mystical experiences.


On 30 April 2000, Faustina was canonized by Holy Father John Paul II in Vatican. The celebrations took place in Krakow and Rome. It was then that the Feast of Divine Mercy was established. The healing of the damaged left ventricle of the Polish priest's heart was canonically considered a miracle. On 10 December 2005, on the initiative of Archbishop Władysław Ziółek, she was announced the patroness of Łódź.
